PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

UNDER DEVELOPMENT: Lt545R

High Speed, Global Shutter, 5 MP CMOS USB 3.0 Camera

Lt545RSony's latest Pregius global shutter CMOS sensors combine beneficial aspects of both CCD and CMOS in a pixel design resulting in impressive performance. The Pregius sensors have an analog pixel design similar to a CCD, but with the back end resembling a CMOS sensor. This architecture takes the advantages of a CCD sensor (excellent imaging performance - including good color reproduction, low noise, and high dynamic range) along with all the digital advantages of a CMOS sensor (built-in analog-to-digital conversion, image correction, digital output and high speed) to produce a low-power, low-cost alternative to traditional CCD sensors.

The Lt545R camera uses the high performance global shutter CMOS IMX250 sensor from Sony for optimal image output while operating at very fast frame rates. Using Lumenera's proven and reliable USB 3.0 technology, the Lt545R provides the fastest full resolution images possible from the Sony Pregius sensors when coupled with USB 3.0.

FEATURED CASE STUDY

DIGITALLY ARCHIVING FILM USING LUMENERA'S LT16059H

The scanning and archiving of film is an extremely important endeavour as it seeks to preserve footage for future generations. However, conventional cellulose acetate-based film is subject to decay due to its organic composition. Accelerated by heat, moisture, and acid, the decomposition of film leads to warping and shrinkage of the medium. As acetic acid leaches out from the film it causes irreversible chemical degradation, known as vinegar syndrome. The leaching acid makes the syndrome contagious as it comes into contact with other portions of the film. The decay leads to film becoming extremely brittle, eventually reducing it to powder. Consequently, long before this occurs, it is important to archive the footage, preferably via digital media, for preservation. A film archiving solution vendor has consulted with and selected Lumenera as their camera supplier to image and preserve film in varying states of decay.

FEATURED SOLUTION SHEET

FLAT PANEL INSPECTION

Learn what makes a camera suitable for flat panel display inspection

Machine vision is being used more and more within the manufacturing industry for quality assurance and inspection purposes. It provides an objective visual verification to ensure quality standards are met and that defects are not present in the finished product or at any point during the assembly process. A good example of the necessity of machine vision within the manufacturing process is the production of flat panel displays, as they can have a number of defects that are too small for the human eye to spot rapidly or identify objectively.

Flat panel displays (FPD) can now be found in a wide range of consumer electronics, from smart phones and tablets to high resolution computer monitors and televisions. Ensuring that these displays reproduce images accurately is heavily reliant on their inspection process.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN A CUSTOM OR OEM CAMERA SOLUTION?

Lt16059HIntegrating an imaging solution into a new or existing system may seem like an overwhelming and costly process at first. Consumer-grade, off-the-shelf point and shoot cameras can sometimes do the job, providing an inexpensive short-term solution, but they often lack in features, capabilities, support, warranty eligibility and fail to meet the exact needs of a customer's application. Turning to an OEM and custom camera manufacturer to provide an imaging solution for a customer's unique requirements may sound like it would be a more expensive option, but this isn’t always the case. Since the customer is provided with a longer-term solution that matches their application needs exactly, the integration of a custom imaging solution often ends up being more cost effective and a more reliable solution in the long run.

VISION INTERFACES 101

Lumenera featured in Quality Magazine

webinar icon"Since the inception of industrial machine vision cameras, various camera interfaces have been developed to meet the needs of the camera manufacturers. Many of the consumer market interfaces like Firewire, USB and Ethernet were created for standard peripheral or networking use. Other interfaces like Camera Link and CoaXpress were developed specifically for imaging since no other interface provided the necessary throughput required for high speed imaging."
