Lumenera's portfolio consists of 23 models of standard camera products, from which it can further offer its clients custom solutions by altering various specifications in a camera system, such as resolution, speed or sensitivity, and employing cutting-edge image sensors.
Practical scientific applications include, for example, including one of the camera models as part of a hand-held medical instrument for the detection of skin cancer, or for ophthalmologists to determine early stages of eye disease.
"Our scientific cameras are primarily used for microscopy -- getting a picture with a camera on a microscope," says Greg Bell, vice-president of business development.
For security applications, Lumenera has formed a strategic partnership with Gatineau-based Synercard Corporation, which develops software to create ID credentials for corporations and government.
Lumenera's technology was impressive, says Synercard's founder and president Bruce Bianco. "What attracted us to them was their ability to build a custom camera solution for the market that we deliver our products to, in a short period of time."
The cameras are also used for high-end surveillance applications involving homeland security, including the checking of crates coming in through ports of entry, and photographing cars' licence plates as they travel across the border.
They also provide a number of benefits to the military, including a higher resolution, multi-mega-pixel image to distinguish greater details on a darkened battlefield.
The company has, on a trial basis, deployed cameras in Iraq with a large U.S. military integrator to protect pipelines and oil fields.
On the industrial front, the company supplies cameras to one of the world's largest producers of asparagus-sorting equipment, to ensure the vegetable is cut and bundled with as little wastage as possible.
The cameras are also used for golf-swing analysis in terms of grip, stance and shoulder position.
