white paper: IS COOL THE RULE FOR CCDs?

Lumenera's INFINITY3-1UR was recently featured in a paper written by James Jonkman, M.Sc. and manager of the Advanced Optical Microscopy Facility (AOMF) for the University Health Network in Toronto. The paper examines the use of a cooled vs. uncooled camera for fluorescence microscopy.

"Research-grade CCD cameras range in price from $2,000 to $20,000, depending on acquisition speed, read-out noise, and deIs Cool the Rulepth of cooling. Most high-performance CCD cameras are cooled to a temperature between 0 and -30˚C. Cooling adds the significant cost of a thermoelectric device and also requires that the sensor be hermetically sealed to prevent damaging condensation on the sensor. But how does the costly addition of cooling actually affect the performance of the CCD camera? For rigorous life sciences research, which applications require a cooled CCD, and which ones do not?"
