LUMENERA FEATURE ARTICLE ON OPHTHALMOLOGY IMAGING

Lumenera was featured in a NASA Tech Briefs article that discusses the importance of color reproduction in ophthalmology imaging:

Lumenera recently partnered with an ophthalmology diagnostic device manufacturer that required a camera for integration into its product. The goal was to obtain sharp retinal fundus images with accurate color reproduction for documentation, sharing, and storage of their results. A date stamp was also needed for later review and diagnosis.

The Challenge
The manufacturer's greatest challenge was taking a precise image of the retina and its various elements that at a later date would provide a true representation of the original image captured. The retina is composed of many similar colors that are visible to the human eye such as reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows, but these colors can prove difficult to reproduce in an image. Accurate color rendition of the different color hues was a must, in order to better contrast the definition of the retina.

Case Study

INFINITY Camera Chosen for Optimization of a Reflected Light LED Fluorescence Illuminator

Lumenera Provides Imaging Solution for Automated Scanning System of Hep-2 Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) Samples

Fraen, a high precision manufacturer of innovative products for various industries in the areas of Aerospace, Automotive, Commercial Instruments, Electronics, Marine, Medical, Scientific Instruments, Optics and Optical Components, was approached by a prominent diagnostics company with a proposition for a joint instrumental development effort. Fraen had already been working on design and innovation in fluorescence microscopy by means of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and accepted the request to optimize a reflected light LED fluorescence illuminator for an automated scanning system. This project would also require an advanced imaging component capable of producing high quality images in challenging light conditions.

Lumenera's INFINITY2-1RC, a 1.4 megapixel CCD scientific USB 2.0 camera provided this solution. The camera offers incredibly low dark current noise, combined with a very high dynamic range and 14-bit output for quantitative and low-light applications. Advanced thermal management allows for long exposure times of several minutes without the need for a cooled camera.

Industrial, Not Consumer Grade

The acquisition of a camera starts with fully understanding all of the application requirements. This ensures that the camera selected for the project will best match the specifications for the required output– whether it’s a high resolution image with excellent color reproduction or an image with high dynamic range and low noise, to ensure the most accurate results for analysis.

In your search for the ideal camera, one of the questions you may find yourself asking is “Can I use a consumer camera instead of an Industrial-grade one?” Our answer “Sure you can, but should you?”

Consumer cameras are not designed to be as robust as industrial cameras. One of the main design differences is industrial cameras use electronic shutters, while consumer cameras use mechanical shutters that have a much shorter life span, and higher failure rate. Some may think an off-the-shelf digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) will work for their application, but in reality these cameras are not built to withstand intense use.
