DID YOU KNOW
The Challenges of Fluorescent Microscopy Imaging
The technique of fluorescence microscopy is an essential tool in life science research because of its superior results over other contrast methods used in optical microscopy.
Fluorescence refers to the illumination of a specimen with a specific wavelength causing it to emit longer wavelengths which are then isolated using an emission filter. The resulting fluorescent areas shine out against a dark background. This technique has made it possible to identify cells and sub-microscopic cellular components surrounded by non-fluorescent materials.
The challenge created by this technique is the difficulty in producing a clear image from a weak signal. Because the emitted light is often only a fraction of the brightness of the excitation light, it is difficult for an imaging system to clearly see the specimen. As a result, traditional microscopy cameras are either unable to view the sample or must use exposures that are so high, camera noise is introduced obscuring the sample and compromising image quality. In addition, high exposures lead to slower frame rates causing the camera preview to lag or stop altogether.
To combat these significant challenges Lumenera has created a special line of ultra sensitive cameras which allow microscopists to see bright, crisp images while retaining extremely high frame rates. The INFINITY3 series of cameras take advantage of the Sony ICX285 sensors high dynamic range, extremely large 6.45 micron square pixels, and low noise electronics. Thermal cooling allows users to detect extremely low signals by removing dark noise which might obscure samples with long exposure times.
A complete set of fluorescent microscopy features are available in INFINITY ANALYZE image analysis software which is included with all INFINITY3 cameras. Features include the ability to add pseudo-colors to monochrome images, to combine multiple color channels into one image, as well as a variety of contrast enhancement methods specifically designed for fluorescent imaging.
Lumenera’s INFINITY3 series of cameras are a price competitive, high-quality solution for life and material science microscope users. To learn more about this camera line click here.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
Lumenera’s INFINITY3-1U is the Ideal Camera for Your Fluorescence Applications
Lumenera offers the ideal camera for low light applications, including fluorescence, in the INFINITY3-1U microscopy camera. The INFINITY3-1U is an ultra-sensitive 1.4 megapixel CCD camera capable of optimal color reproduction and designed specifically for use in a wide variety of scientific and industrial applications.
With 6.45µm squared pixels in a 2/3” format with a maximum resolution of 1392x1040 these cameras deliver outstanding image quality and value for challenging low light applications such as fluorescence and NIR. Uncompressed images in live stream ing video and still-image capture are provided across a USB 2.0 digital interface. The INFINITY3-1U employs a Sony ICX285 1.4 megapixel CCD sensor, the market leader for fluorescence and other challenging applications.
The INFINITY3-1U’s adaptability to variable resolution and frame rate requirements, combined with low noise performance and 8 or 12-bit depth, make the INFINITY3-1U an ideal camera for both live and fixed cell imaging. Live video preview allows for real-time focus; while auto exposure and auto/manual white balance efficiently capture your optimal image. On-board memory buffering is included to guarantee image delivery to a host computer.
The innovative features and excellent price-to-performance ratio of the INFINITY3-1U make it it an excellent addition to any laboratory. The INFINITY3-1U is available in color or monochrome, as well as OEM form factors including board-level and custom enclosures. To learn more about the INFINITY camera line please click here.

HOW TO
Sizing Your Preview Resolution in INFINITY ANALYZE
Lumenera’s INFINITY ANALYZE image analysis software has two options with which to alter the size of both the preview and captured image. In the “Fit to Window” mode, users may shape the preview to any size they wish and have the option of capturing either the full field of view or the user defined area. Alternatively, the “Image Window Size” may be defined in pixels (WxH).

CORPORATE NEWS
New Process Improves Efficiency and Pricing for Out-of-Warranty and Voided-Warranty Camera Repairs
Effective April 1, 2010, Lumenera will be introducing a new repair process for Out-of-Warranty and Voided-Warranty cameras that includes an update to repair costs.
To better service our customers and keep costs relative to purchase price, Lumenera will begin determining repair charges based upon the camera's model, parts, and labor related to the repair and the sensitivity of the work required. There will be a minimum charge of US$200 for any Out-of-Warranty and Voided-Warranty camera repair.
Out-of-Warranty and Voided-Warranty cameras sent in for repair will be assessed in triage to identify the damage or problem area. We will provide the camera owner with an estimate of the repair cost prior to the work being completed. No work will commence until this quote is approved by the camera owner.
For additional information please contact Tenaha Moxon, Senior Sales Coordinator, at tenaha.moxon@lumenera.com.
